LummusLed Kemphanen heeft de afgelopen weken niet stil gezeten. Het bestuur heeft met het vastleggen van de 53-jarige, uit Chicago afkomstige amerikaan, een voor BeNeLeague begrippen, topcoach binnen gehaald en daarmee een belangrijke stap gezet in de verdere professionalisering en imago van haar organisatie.

Technisch Directeur, Marc Visschers, licht de totstandkoming toe. “Ik was met mijn kinderen aan het vrij schaatsen op de ijsbaan in Nijmegen toen ik Larry onverwachts tegenkwam. Hij zag mij niet maar het gaf mij direct de ingeving om hem te gaan benaderen. Wij hebben daarna contact gezocht, onze visie en plannen meegegeven en hij stond er heel positief in, voor een tweede gesprek. Tot onze verbazing kwamen we tot overeenstemming en heeft Eindhoven Kemphanen voor het eerst een Europese topcoach voor de spelersgroep staan!”
In het seizoen 2004/2005 kwam Larry naar Europa toe en belandde in de Oberliga als hoofdcoach bij Schweinfurt en een jaar later in Oberhausen, alvorens hij in Nederland terecht kwam bij de Tilburg Trappers.
Suarez verbleef daar 3 seizoenen en was zeer succesvol. Hij won 2 keer het landskampioenschap en 1 keer de beker. In zijn eerste seizoen in Nederland, was Suarez tevens coach bij Jong Oranje U18 en dwong hij direct promotie af naar Divisie 1 tijdens het WK.
Larry zocht duidelijk de uitdaging naar een niveau hoger en kwam uit bij Cortina in de Italiaanse topleague. Ook daar gaf hij zijn visitekaartje af als coach en verhuisde naar de DEL2 in Duitsland bij de club Crimmitschau.
Larry ging een seizoen later weer terug aan de slag in de Oberliga bij Ratingen Ice Aliens toen hij in de zomer werd benaderd als hoofdcoach van het Nederlands Team.
Suarez eindigde met de nationale ploeg 3e op het WK, achter Zuid Korea (3-4 OT) en Polen (1-5). Hij vervolgde zijn weg als coach in de Oberliga bij Hammer Eisbären Berlin en kwam een seizoen later zelfs uit in de Oostenrijkse topleague bij Merano (Italiaans team wat mee speelde in de zogenoemde INL).
De afgelopen twee seizoenen is Larry, vanwege privé omstandigheden, niet actief geweest als coach. Hij bezocht echter wel veel wedstrijden in Duitsland, Italië en ook in Tilburg. Nu dan, gaat hij weer aan de slag in Nederland…
Hieronder een interview met Larry Suarez, op een drietal, dat aan de kersverse hoofdcoach werden gesteld;
Wat was voor jou de reden om voor Eindhoven te kiezen aankomend seizoen?
I was approached by Marc Visschers and Jan Willem van Stuijvenberg about a month ago. They had laid out a concept and a plan that they had for the club short term , as well as long term. It was a very ambitious plan, yet realistic at the same time. I felt that it would be a great challenge at this point in my career to be involved with a club and a league, that is still somewhat in the development phase. My experience over 3 years in Tilburg and with the National Team, was extremely positive on every level. I have a great respect for the Dutch hockey player and thier commitment to working hard and to improving. There are several factors that made me decide to sign with Eindhoven.
Je hebt in het verleden in Nederland en diverse Europese topleagues gecoacht, met succes. Wat voor een type coach ben jij?
I believe that I am the kind of coach that treats his players as I would my own family, in regards to holding everybody accountable for the commitment that they make to the team, on and off the ice. I believe that I am demanding , but fair. I think every player has a genius and can contribute to the team in some way , in order to have success. It’s about players preparation and coming to the rink ready to work hard, in order to realise their potential. I can be an easy coach to play for, and it can be a fun season, if the players prepare and commit like professionals. There are no exceptions based on age, years in the league, or the line they play on. Every player needs to work 100% and commit 100% each and every time we step onto the ice , in practice and games. Special treatment and favours do not exist. I hold every player equally accountable for playing with-in the system and the game plan.
De sportieve doelstelling is om bij de top 4 te eindigen. Hoe kan jouw bijdrage het team helpen deze gezamenlijke doelstelling te gaan halen?My job is to win , get the most out of each individual player and create a winning environment.
Success is attained by a collective; the board must do their part , the players must do their part and I must do my part as a coach. My job is to commit with a relentless work ethic, teach and instill a system of play. I have to communicate that to the players individually and as a team. My job is to leave no stone unturned, in our prepreation and keep the players excited to what we are trying to achieve as a team, on a daily basis over the season. It’s difficult for me to project where the team can finish without having seen the team players, or having seen the league. My job always remains the same, no matter which league and no matter what level of the league.
